Two police officers were killed and another seriously injured after gunmen attacked a security checkpoint in the Obiri-Kwere area of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Rivers State, on Monday night.
The affected officers, who were attached to the Aluu Police Division in Ikwerre Local Government Area, were reportedly carrying out a routine stop-and-search operation along the Mbodo/Aluu axis of Obiri-Kwere Road when the assailants struck at about 9 p.m.
Witnesses said the gunmen opened fire on the officers before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.
The attack occurred less than 24 hours after the Rivers State Police Command announced the arrest of a suspected notorious criminal, Austine Emenike, popularly known as “Oyibo.” Police said the suspect is linked to a larger criminal network, and officers recovered a locally made pistol, four single-barrel guns, and five live cartridges during the operation.
A video circulating online showed the bodies of the slain officers, still dressed in their uniforms, lying at the scene. A voice heard in the footage alleged that armed robbers had attacked and robbed residents in the area before turning their guns on the policemen and escaping.
Confirming the incident on Tuesday, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Blessing Agabe, said two officers lost their lives while a third officer sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
She also disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, led members of the command’s management team to the scene on Tuesday morning for an assessment, adding that investigations into the attack are ongoing.
