Videos and photos trending online has revealed severe flooding in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, following the collapse of the Alau Dam early Tuesday morning.

The dam’s failure has submerged nearly half of the city, including government offices and vital infrastructure like the State Secretariat.

The flood, exacerbated by overflow and affecting areas with little vegetation, echoes a similar disaster from September 13, 1994, when torrential rains also caused the dam to overflow.

Authorities are said to be responding to the crisis as vital infrastructure
