Aircraft’s Perilous Journey On The High Seas
A decommissioned Boeing 767 is undergoing a unique journey – not by air, but by sea.
The 159ft-long aircraft took to the high seas after workers spent six hours loading the giant cargo onto a barge at Ireland’s Shannon Airport, in County Clare.
It then sailed up an estuary and into open waters for the journey to a resort in County Sligo.
Curious onlookers gathered on the shore to watch the 50-ton plane’s perilous trip.
The aircraft is being moved as part of a project carried out by businessman David McGowan.
The resort will see other modes of transportation such as buses, taxis and a train also turned into accommodation for visitors.
Deirdre Whitney, property manager at Shannon Airport, said the airport had never moved such unique cargo in the past.
“David McGowan’s enthusiasm was infectious and we were delighted to be on hand to support him every step of the way with this unique project,” she said.
“We pulled out all the stops to assist, with safety and minimising disruption to airport customers our key priority.
“I certainly never thought I would see the day when an aircraft would be put on a barge and set sail out the estuary.
“It will have a new lease of life which will boost not only the local economy in Enniscrone, but right along the Wild Atlantic Way.
“We wish David and his crew a bon voyage and every success with this venture.”
