OYO GOVERNMENT SEALS COLLAPSED RESTAURANT BUILDING IN DUGBE, ORDERS INTEGRITY TEST ON OTHER BRANCHES

The Oyo State Government has sealed a building under construction, owned by a popular restaurant chain in the Dugbe area of Ibadan, following its collapse during a rainstorm on Sunday night.
The Commissioner for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Williams Akin-Funmilayo, disclosed this on Monday after an on-the-spot inspection of the site.
Akin-Funmilayo said the decision to seal the property was taken to prevent potential casualties, ensure public safety, and enable a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the collapse. Preliminary findings, according to the commissioner, indicated that sub-standard and low-quality building materials were used in the construction.
“We have taken this step to safeguard lives and property,” he said. “An integrity test will be conducted not only on the collapsed structure but also on all branches of the restaurant operating within the state to prevent a repeat of this unfortunate incident.”
He added that the outcome of the integrity test would determine the government’s next line of action.
The collapse comes months after a similar incident in October 2024, when a building in the Jegede area of Olunloyo, Ibadan, caved in, claiming 10 lives and leaving several others injured.
General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, recalled that his agency received a distress call around 2 a.m. during the October incident, leading to a rescue operation that recovered bodies and assisted survivors.
Sunday’s collapse has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of building regulations and more rigorous oversight of construction projects across the state.
