LAGOS ORDERS MANDATORY INSPECTION OF ALL E-HAILING VEHICLES OVER SAFETY CONCERNS

The Lagos State Government has directed a comprehensive inspection of all vehicles operated by licensed e-hailing platforms, citing safety risks, regulatory breaches, and poor service delivery.
In a statement on Sunday titled “LASG to Roll Out Inspection Schedule for E-Hailing Operators”, Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the move aims to improve safety, service quality, and compliance within the sector.
Osiyemi noted the “deplorable condition” of some vehicles in use, warning that any found unsuitable will be barred from operating on Lagos roads. He also expressed concern over weak databases among some operators, which hinder the tracking of crimes linked to their services.
Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Olawale Musa, stressed that the use of unregistered vehicles “will no longer be tolerated” due to the security risks involved. He added that all drivers must be certified by the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute and urged residents to avoid offline bookings to ensure safety and accountability.
The directive followed a meeting at the Ministry of Transportation, Alausa, Ikeja, attended by representatives of Uber, Bolt, Lagride, Laurie, Vas Acquico, InDrive, Folti Tech, and EDryv. Operators at the meeting outlined ongoing safety upgrades, including panic buttons and enhanced driver verification systems.
