The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has withheld the Certificate of National Service of Lagos-based corps member, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as “Raye,” and extended her service year by two months.

In a statement posted on X on Sunday, the NYSC said the decision followed her failure to attend the April 2025 biometrics clearance, stressing that the action was in line with its Bye-Laws.

The service dismissed claims that Uguamaye, who had been critical of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, was being targeted for her political views.

“Contrary to false claims that she was denied a Certificate of National Service (CNS) due to critical remarks about the government, this assertion is entirely unfounded and false in its entirety,” the statement read.

The NYSC disclosed that Uguamaye, with State Code LA/24B/8325, was among 131 corps members whose certificates were withheld for valid disciplinary reasons. It added that the two-month extension was a standard procedure and not unique to her case.

“It is important to note that this extension is a standard procedure and not unique to her case, and the principle of equal treatment was only applied in this case,” the service reiterated.

Raye gained public attention in March after a viral TikTok video in which she criticised the current administration, blaming it for worsening Nigeria’s economic hardship and rising inflation.

The NYSC maintained that its decision was purely administrative, stressing that similar sanctions had long been imposed on corps members who failed to meet clearance obligations.
