The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially commenced preparations for the 2026 governorship election in Osun State with the posting of the statutory Notice of Election across all 30 local government areas and the Area Office in Modakeke.

Speaking during an expanded stakeholders’ engagement in Osogbo on Wednesday, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Osun State, Dr. Mutiu Agboke said the meeting brought together political parties, security agencies, civil society groups, religious leaders, the media, and persons with disabilities to foster inclusivity and transparency ahead of the polls.

Dr. Agboke reiterated that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) will begin nationwide on August 18, 2025, with an online pre-registration process, followed by biometric capture at INEC local government offices from August 25.

According to him, physical registration will also be available at no cost. Eligible registrants include first-time voters, those who have turned 18, individuals seeking replacements for lost or damaged PVCs, and voters requesting transfers.

INEC records as of July 31, 2025, show 1,954,800 registered voters in Osun State, with 1,594,006 having collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and 360,794 yet to do so. Dr. Agboke urged residents to collect their PVCs, stressing, “No PVC, no voting.”

He also reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to inclusivity, highlighting provisions such as Braille ballot guides, magnifying glasses, assistive listening devices, and priority queues for persons with disabilities, the elderly, and pregnant women.

The timetable released by INEC headquarters schedules party primaries between November 24 and December 15, 2025, while submission of candidate nomination forms will run from January 15 to February 9, 2026. The governorship election itself is set for August 8, 2026.

Dr. Agboke warned against underage registration, vote buying, and electoral violence, calling on political parties, civil society, and the media to intensify voter education and advocacy. He assured that technologies such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) will be deployed to ensure credible polls.

“INEC alone cannot deliver a peaceful and successful election,” he said. “In togetherness, we shall all achieve the desired outcome of our election. Your vote will count.”
