Tragedy struck in Ipara, Remo area of Ogun State, on Monday when a car race organised over a N30,000 wager ended in a fatal accident that claimed five lives, including three suspected internet fraudsters (Yahoo boys) and two residents.

The incident, which occurred around 1:40 p.m. near the Owolowo area, involved an unregistered Lexus car. According to eyewitnesses, the suspected Yahoo boys had staged a high-speed race for a cash prize when one of the drivers lost control, veered off the road, and rammed into a roadside shop, instantly killing two bystanders identified as Akeem Ashiru and Shina Badejo.

The driver and two other male occupants of the vehicle sustained severe injuries and were rushed to different hospitals. However, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed that the driver died on the spot, while the two passengers later succumbed to their injuries one at Isara State Hospital and the other at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu.

Videos from the scene circulating on social media show lifeless victims on the ground, the mangled car lodged into the damaged shop, and sympathisers wailing over the loss.

The incident came barely hours after another fatal accident in Abeokuta, where a yet-to-be-identified man was crushed by a Volvo truck after falling off a moving motorcycle in the Rounder area of the state.

Authorities have reiterated warnings against reckless driving and dangerous car stunts, stressing the need for road users to prioritise safety over risky competitions.
