The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has lifted the lifetime flight ban earlier imposed on Comfort Emmanson, the Ibom Air passenger sanctioned for alleged unruly behaviour.

In a statement released on Thursday, AON spokesperson Professor Obiora Okonkwo said the reversal followed an appeal by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.

Okonkwo stated that airline operators decided to rescind the ban after considering several factors, including Emmanson’s show of remorse, the withdrawal of the official complaint, the dismissal of legal charges, and her release from detention.

He commended the Federal Government for initiating a retraining retreat aimed at equipping aviation security personnel and airline crew to better manage disruptive passengers. He also urged aviation agencies to step up public education on the dangers and legal consequences of such behaviour as outlined in Section 85 of the Civil Aviation Act, 2022, and Part 17 of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations, 2023.

Such behaviours, he noted, include “assault or threats to crew members, refusal to follow safety instructions, smoking in restricted areas, fighting, disorderly actions, or interfering with aircraft equipment.”

The AON emphasized that both pilots-in-command and aviation security officers are empowered to restrain and remove unruly passengers, and to hand them over to appropriate authorities in order to maintain flight safety.

“We confirm that members shall cooperate with the relevant aviation agencies and participate in the retraining retreats on how to handle cases of unruly and disruptive passengers as proposed by the minister,” Okonkwo added.
