The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Abner Shittu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), winner of the Karim One State Constituency bye-election in Taraba State.
The election, conducted across five wards on Saturday, was held to replace former lawmaker Mike Dio Jen, who resigned his seat in the Taraba State House of Assembly after being appointed Commissioner for Tertiary Education.
Announcing the result, the Returning Officer, Mustapha Sa’ad, said Shittu secured 5,895 votes to defeat his closest rival, Ali Kanda of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 5,488 votes in what was described as a keenly contested election.
“Having satisfied the requirements of the law and scored the highest number of votes, I hereby declare Abner Shittu of the All Progressives Congress winner of the Karim One State Constituency by-election,” Sa’ad declared.
Other parties trailed behind, with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) polling 2,069 votes, while the Social Democratic Party (SDP) recorded 106 votes.
