Three farmers have died after a boat carrying yams and passengers capsized in the Kubo ward of Shani Local Government Area, Borno State, on Monday.
According to the North East office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the boat was conveying 20 farmers across a river to their farms when it capsized due to overloading. Seventeen of the passengers were rescued, while the bodies of three victims were recovered.
The Chairman of Shani LGA, Abdu Labaki, confirmed the incident, describing it as a tragic loss for the community.
A resident, Audu Abu, also confirmed the accident, stating that the canoe had carried more than 27 people at the time of the mishap. He noted that search efforts were ongoing to ascertain if there were more missing persons.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those affected by this incident, and may Allah grant protection and safety to all,” Abu said.
The accident comes amid recent reports of heavy flooding in Borno State, which has destroyed homes and farmlands, raising concerns about safety on waterways.
