Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested members of an armed robbery syndicate notorious for attacking churches at night and carting away instruments and other valuables.
The spokesperson of the command, SP Bright Edafe, announced the arrest in a statement on Wednesday, noting that the operation followed directives from the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, for Divisional Police Officers to intensify intelligence-led operations against the criminals.
According to the statement, the police received a distress call on September 16, 2025, about an imminent armed attack on Dominican City Church along Polytechnic Road by Sticals Hotel, Ogwashi-Uku.
Responding swiftly, patrol teams from the Ogwashi-Uku Division, working with local vigilantes and led by the DPO, CSP Israel Okomoyon, intercepted a gold-coloured Toyota Sienna (Reg. no: EFR-150-XB) with two occupants, identified as Emmanuel Emiowor, 21, of PTI Road, Warri, and Noah Philip, 20, also of PTI Road, Warri.
A search of the vehicle and suspects yielded one pump-action gun, three locally made single-barrel guns, one fabricated revolver, one live cartridge, and an iron rod allegedly used to break into church doors.
Upon interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed to being part of a syndicate specialising in robbing churches. Police also disclosed that some stolen items have already been recovered, while the suspects and exhibits are currently in custody.
The Commissioner of Police reiterated the command’s resolve to rid Delta State of criminals, stressing that the state will never be allowed to become a safe haven for crime.
He urged residents to continue supporting the police by providing timely information and reporting suspicious activities through the emergency line 08036684974 or at the nearest police station.
