NEMA CONFIRMS 120 SHOPS DESTROYED, ONE INJURED IN LAGOS MANDILAS MARKET FIRE

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that no fewer than 120 shops were destroyed and one person injured in the fire outbreak at Mandilas Market, Lagos Island.
The incident occurred on Tuesday when flames engulfed Emab Plaza, a four-storey building located behind Mandilas.
The fire, first reported around 9 p.m., started on the fourth floor and rapidly spread to nearby apartments.
In a statement on its X account on Thursday, NEMA disclosed that the fire originated from a faulty changeover switch in one of the buildings before quickly extending to adjoining structures.
Emergency responders, including the Federal and Lagos State Fire Services, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, and other stakeholders, battled through the night to contain the blaze.
According to NEMA: “The presence of highly flammable materials such as clothing, footwear, and plastics in the market contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
“Four buildings housing approximately 200 shops were completely destroyed in the incident. One individual sustained injuries from smoke inhalation and is currently receiving medical attention at a nearby health facility.”
The agency further stated that “the combined efforts of all emergency responders ensured the eventual containment and complete extinguishing of the fire. The Nigeria Police Force was on ground to secure the area, cordon off the affected site, and prevent possible vandalism or looting.”
NEMA added that its Lagos Operations Office is collaborating with stakeholders to support affected traders and enhance safety awareness in densely populated commercial hubs.
