Canadian artist Drake has encountered a legal obstacle after an American judge dismissed his defamation case regarding Kendrick Lamar’s viral diss track “Not Like Us.”

Drake initiated the lawsuit in January 2025, alleging that Universal Music Group (UMG) promoted and profited from the track, which he claimed misrepresented him as a pedophile and harmed his reputation.

Nevertheless, Judge Jeannette A. Vargas determined that the lyrics constituted “nonactionable opinion,” emphasizing that the competitive essence of rap battles frequently involves exaggeration, insults, and figurative language that reasonable audiences would not interpret as literal truth.

UMG celebrated the decision, describing it as a victory for artistic expression and cautioning against efforts to utilize the legal system to suppress artists.

The lawsuit arises from the protracted rivalry between Drake and Lamar, which intensified in 2024 when the two rappers exchanged diss tracks, culminating in Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” a chart-topping hit that captivated discussions and audiences globally.
