LAGOS STATE SET TO LAUNCH OMI EKO PROJECT TO REVOLUTIONISE WATER TRANSPORTATION

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to officially launch the Omi Eko Project, a landmark initiative aimed at transforming water transportation in the state, on Friday, October 17, 2025, at the Five Cowries Terminal, Falomo.
The project, spearheaded by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), represents a major step toward achieving a cleaner, smarter, and more efficient urban mobility system that aligns with the vision of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration for a modern, sustainable Lagos.
According to the General Manager of LASWA, Mr. Damilola Emmanuel, the event will be attended by top government officials, development partners, key stakeholders in the transport and maritime sectors, and will feature a virtual presentation of the Omi Eko Project and the ceremonial unveiling by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
According to him, the Omi Eko Project is expected to redefine Lagos’s water transport ecosystem through the deployment of over 78 high-capacity electric ferries, digital ticketing systems, intelligent terminals, and enhanced safety measures.
Mr. Emmanuel noted that the initiative aims to significantly cut travel times, ease road congestion, and offer Lagosians a reliable and environmentally friendly commuting alternative.
The General Manager described the Five Cowries Terminal, one of the state’s busiest intermodal hubs linking land and water routes, as the ideal venue for the launch, symbolising the state’s progress toward an integrated transport system as outlined in the Lagos Urban Mobility Plan.
He emphasised that the Omi Eko Project will not only strengthen infrastructure across Lagos waterways but also advance the state’s climate resilience goals and sustainable transport agenda through smart technology and eco-friendly innovation.
