The Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Cecilia Bolaji Dada, has urged young girls to be confident, ambitious, and unafraid to pursue leadership positions, stressing that gender should never be seen as a limitation to success.
Speaking at the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child celebration held at Dolphin Senior High School, Lagos Island, Dada shared her personal journey in politics, recounting moments of rejection and resilience.
The event, themed “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis,” was organized by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education under the INNOVATE-EKO STEAM Mentorship Series, to empower girls through education and mentorship.
Reflecting on her 25-year experience in public service, the Commissioner said she was once denied a position simply because she was a woman. However, she noted that the setback only strengthened her resolve to succeed.
“Being a girl does not stop you from getting to positions of power and authority,” she declared.
Dada encouraged the girls to pursue their dreams with courage, confidence, and determination, adding that they should never see themselves as less privileged or incapable.
“I want every girl here to know that you are powerful, capable, and deserving of every opportunity. Don’t limit yourselves because of your gender,” she told the students.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of the Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to continue implementing policies that promote gender equality, women’s empowerment, and access to education for all girls across the state.
She also applauded the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education for providing platforms that inspire and mentor young girls, describing education as the most effective tool to break barriers and open doors to leadership opportunities.
Dada concluded by reminding the students that true leadership begins with self-belief and the willingness to stand out for positive change, encouraging them to become active contributors to the development of their communities.
