The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander, Sector 3, Operation FANSAN YAMA, Maj. Gen. Chinedu Nnebeife, has led troops in a successful rescue operation in Kwara State.

This was revealed in a statement on Saturday by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 2 Division, Lt. Col. Polycarp Okoye.

Okoye explained that during an operational visit to Patrol Base Babanla on Thursday, the GOC led troops in an advance into Babasango Forest, where two kidnapped victims were rescued.

He said the rescued victims were later handed over to the traditional ruler of Ayekale, Oba Pius Oluwole Onidofin of Idofin Odoeshe Ayekale.

According to him, the visit followed a recent bandit attack near Idofin in Omu-Aran Local Government Area, where three traders were killed at Olegbede village.

“Oba Oluwole attributed the attacks to the community’s proximity to Babasango Forest and appealed for sustained military presence.

Maj. Gen. Nnebeife commiserated with the royal father and assured that the Nigerian Army would sustain ongoing operations to clear the forest of bandits and other criminal elements,” he said.

It would be recalled that armed bandits had earlier invaded Oke-Ode community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing no fewer than 15 vigilantes and hunters in late September — a development that forced many residents to flee the community, leaving it almost deserted.
