FRESH TENSION IN ABUJA AS #RELEASENNAMDIKANUNOW PROTESTERS RETURN, POLICE RESPOND
Law enforcement officials on Monday disbanded demonstrators advocating for the release of the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, in the Utako district of Abuja.
The protestors, who had previously been compelled to retreat after police deployed tear gas canisters in the Maitama area, subsequently reassembled at Utako to persist in their demonstration.
Nonetheless, armed personnel intervened once more and dispersed them.
The participants, consisting of civil rights advocates and members of pro-democracy organizations, were engaged in the ReleaseNnamdiKanuNow initiative, which seeks to compel the Federal Government to adhere to the 2022 Court of Appeal ruling that exonerated Kanu.
Earlier in the day, law enforcement had discharged numerous rounds of tear gas toward both demonstrators and bystanders near the Transcorp Hilton and the surrounding streets in Maitama.
This situation incited alarm, prompting commuters, vendors, and drivers to seek refuge.
Following their regrouping at Utako, the demonstrators resumed chanting solidarity anthems and showcasing placards before security personnel again utilized tear gas to disperse them.
Security measures have since been heightened throughout the Federal Capital Territory, with military personnel, police, and agents from the Department of State Services deployed at key locations, including Eagle Square, the Federal Secretariat, and the Three Arms Zone.
Additionally, at the Berger roundabout, our correspondent observed a significant presence of soldiers alongside an armored truck stationed in the area.
