NLC GIVES FG FOUR WEEKS TO END ASUU CRISIS OR FACE NATIONWIDE ACTION
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has handed the Federal Government a four-week ultimatum to resolve its lingering face-off with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) — or risk a nationwide shutdown.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, issued the warning after an emergency meeting in Abuja, accusing the government of neglecting its agreements with university lecturers and worsening the education crisis.
Ajaero said the NLC stands fully behind ASUU’s demands, including the payment of withheld salaries, better funding for public universities, and the full implementation of all previous pacts. He also slammed the “no work, no pay” policy, describing it as a punishment for lecturers who have been forced to fight for their rights.
“The government cannot keep breaching agreements and expect calm. The workers will not watch in silence while our universities collapse,” he said.
The labour body warned that if the issues remain unresolved after four weeks, it would mobilise workers across all sectors in solidarity with the striking lecturers.
ASUU had earlier declared a two-week warning strike on October 13, accusing the government of insincerity and failure to meet key demands. With NLC now stepping in, the standoff appears set to escalate unless quick action is taken.
