PROTEST MAYHEM IN ABUJA AS POLICE FIRE TEARGAS, SEAL OFF PLAZA
A renowned retail establishment, EDA Plaza, located in the Jabi district of Abuja, has been shuttered following a police intervention involving the discharge of tear gas to disperse demonstrators on Monday.
The demonstrators had initially gathered in the vicinity to advocate for the liberation of Nnamdi Kanu, the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, and were subsequently scattered by law enforcement personnel.
In their effort to flee the tear gas, some participants sought refuge within the plaza.
The media observed law enforcement officials discharging numerous canisters of tear gas into the complex, compelling journalists, vendors, and patrons to evacuate in distress.
At the time of this report, the plaza remained closed, with police vehicles conducting patrols in the vicinity.
The media previously reported that law enforcement officers had disbanded demonstrators advocating for the release of the detained IPOB leader in the Utako sector of Abuja.
The protesters, who had earlier been compelled to retreat after police deployed tear gas canisters against them in the Maitama area, regrouped in Utako to resume their demonstration.
Nevertheless, armed personnel intervened once more, scattering the group.
The protesters, consisting of civil rights advocates and members of pro-democracy organizations, were part of the ReleaseNnamdiKanuNow initiative aimed at pressuring the Federal Government to adhere to the 2022 Court of Appeal ruling that acquitted and discharged Kanu.
Earlier in the day, police had unleashed multiple rounds of tear gas at demonstrators and bystanders near the Transcorp Hilton and surrounding streets in Maitama.
This situation instigated widespread panic, prompting commuters, vendors, and drivers to hurriedly seek safety.
Following their regrouping in Utako, the protesters resumed chanting solidarity anthems and displaying placards before security forces utilized tear gas once again to disperse them.
