Washington, D.C. — A section of the East Wing of the White House has been demolished as part of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to construct a grand new ballroom within the presidential complex.

Construction crews began tearing down parts of the East Wing earlier this week, with heavy machinery and workers dismantling walls and removing debris as the controversial project got underway.

The new ballroom, estimated to cost about $250 million, is expected to accommodate up to 1,000 guests, making it one of the most significant additions to the White House in over a century.

Announcing the development during a briefing, Trump said:

“Right on the other side, you have a lot of construction. I’m pleased to announce that ground has been broken on this new, big, beautiful White House Ballroom.”

While Trump has maintained that the project will not interfere with the main structure, the demolition of the East Wing — which is directly attached to the mansion — has sparked debate among historians and preservationists.

According to the former president, the East Wing will be “fully modernised” and “more beautiful than ever when complete.”

The East Wing traditionally houses the First Lady’s office and serves as the primary entrance for visitors. Built in the early 1900s and expanded in 1942, it has long been considered a vital part of White House operations.

The ballroom project has drawn mixed reactions — with supporters calling it a legacy statement and critics describing it as an unnecessary show of extravagance.
