Kenneth Ofori-Atta, former finance minister of Ghana, has been detained by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), his legal team confirmed in a statement on Wednesday.

Ofori-Atta’s lawyers explained that his detention concerns a pending petition regarding the status of his stay in the United States. “His US legal team is in contact with ICE and expects the matter to be resolved expeditiously,” the statement said.

The former minister, who has been in the US for over a year for medical treatment, is reportedly being held at the Caroline detention facility.

Ofori-Atta has faced legal challenges in Ghana. In February 2025, he was declared wanted for failing to attend interviews tied to corruption allegations. In November 2025, the Ghanaian government filed charges against him and six others, and in December 2025, it formally requested his extradition.

He served as Ghana’s finance minister from 2017 to 2024 under former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
