The All Progressives Congress (APC) faction in Rivers State, led by Emeka Beke, has called on the state house of assembly to resist attempts to “destabilise” the government of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The Rivers assembly began impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, during plenary on Thursday, prompting a response from the APC. Martins Amaewhule, speaker of the house, had earlier accused the governor and his deputy of posing a threat to democracy.

In a statement signed by Darlington Nwauju, the party’s spokesperson, the APC faction described the impeachment move as “unfortunate” but reaffirmed that it respects the legislature’s constitutional powers.

The faction, however, rejected the impeachment process, calling it an attempt to revive “hangovers from strifes that occurred within the PDP.”

The APC faction said the dispute revolves around the state budget, noting that during the emergency rule, an appropriation bill of N1.485 trillion was transmitted to the National Assembly in May 2025, approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025. The budget was intended to run until August 2026, and the faction argued that the governor could legally choose not to present a supplementary budget.

Highlighting constitutional provisions, the party stressed that a governor is allowed a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year, reinforcing that the impeachment lacks legal justification.

The APC urged lawmakers, especially party members, to resist external pressures aimed at destabilising the Fubara-led government. The faction warned that continuing the impeachment process could tarnish the party’s image and impede the progress and development of Rivers State.

“Let our state remain a democracy and not a politicocracy!!!” the statement concluded.
