The Federal Government has confirmed that the Super Eagles’ match bonuses for the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have completed all necessary regulatory processes.

In a statement on Thursday, Minister of State Finance Doris Uzoka-Anite said the payments will be credited to the players’ domiciliary accounts “starting today or tomorrow.”

The announcement follows a threat by the team on Wednesday to boycott travel to the host city of their quarter-final match due to unpaid allowances. Nigeria is set to face Algeria on Saturday in Marrakesh, a five-hour journey from their current base in Fez, with the team scheduled to travel on Thursday.

Uzoka-Anite explained that the delay was due to the “conversion process to move funds into foreign currency,” reflecting the players’ preferred mode of payment. She added that the process has now been fast-tracked and that the “final transfers to domiciliary accounts are currently in flight.”

“The Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria have successfully streamlined the foreign exchange processing to ensure our players are rewarded without further delay,” the minister said. “Going forward, the process will be fully streamlined to ensure faster, more predictable disbursements in line with international best practice.”

This is not the first time allowance issues have affected the team. In November 2024, the Eagles boycotted training during the African World Cup playoffs due to unpaid allowances, contributing to Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualification disappointment after a loss to DR Congo.

Despite the administrative challenges, Nigeria has performed strongly at AFCON, winning all four matches and topping Group C with 12 goals scored, including a 4-0 victory over Mozambique. The winner of Saturday’s quarter-final against Algeria will face either Morocco or Cameroon in the semi-final.
