Seun Kuti Slams Comparisons Between Wizkid and Fela, Calls It an Insult
Seun Kuti, Grammy-nominated singer and son of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has criticized fans for labeling Afrobeats star Wizkid as the modern-day Fela, describing such comparisons as a “disrespectful insult” to his father’s legacy.
Speaking during a recent Instagram livestream, Kuti directed his comments at Wizkid’s fanbase, Wizkid FC, urging them to stop equating the Ojuelegba crooner with the late Afrobeat pioneer.
“Wizkid FC, keep Fela’s name out of your mouths. You try to claim your artist is the new Fela. When you saw the shoes were too big to fill, people like me didn’t let you get away with that insult… It is actually an insult [to compare Wizkid to Fela],” Kuti said.
He added that while he respects defiance, ignorance disguised as admiration is unacceptable. “Your lack of respect came from ignorance, not defiance… Why must Fela always be dragged into petty fan arguments? Overzealous fan behavior is harming the music industry, making collaborations difficult,” Kuti noted.
Kuti described Wizkid FC as “the most ignorant fanbase in the world” and urged fans to focus on their artist’s music rather than constantly making comparisons. “Can’t you enjoy your artist without comparing them to others? If you feel the need to compare, it shows the music doesn’t spiritually satisfy you,” he explained.
