The Ogun–Guangdong Free Trade Zone (OGFTZ) has clarified that the fire outbreak at the Good Mattress FZE facility, one of the enterprises operating within the zone, was not caused by a gas explosion.

The fire incident occurred at about 8:00 a.m. on Sunday at the foam-producing company located within the industrial park.

Videos online showed students fleeing their hostels as thick smoke billowed into the sky, triggering panic among residents around the Obanla axis of the area.

In a statement issued on Monday to address the incident, OGFTZ management confirmed that no casualties were recorded and that the fire did not spread to any residential areas.

The statement, signed by Steve Makanjuola on behalf of the Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) and China-Africa Investment FZC, said the cause of the fire remains unknown, adding that verified findings would be communicated in due course.

The management reassured members of the public that the situation has been fully brought under control, stressing the zone’s commitment to maintaining high safety and operational standards.

“The fire was professionally contained through the prompt response of OGFTZ’s internal fire service team, working closely with the Ogun State Fire Service and other private companies with established collaborations with the Zone,” the statement said.

“This timely intervention successfully prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining enterprises. There were no casualties recorded, and the incident was effectively de-escalated before it could pose any wider risk.”

The management further dismissed reports suggesting a gas explosion or damage to residential areas.

“Contrary to misleading reports circulating online, the incident did not extend to any residential areas, nor was it a gas explosion,” the statement added.

OGFTZ noted that investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing and assured that confirmed details would be shared through official channels.

The management also expressed appreciation to relevant government agencies, host communities, and partner companies for their cooperation, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and coordinated emergency response.
