The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority (NEPZA) and China-Africa Investment FZC, which manage the Ogun Free Trade Zone in Igbesa, Ogun State, said on Monday that the fire incident at the zone on Sunday was not caused by a gas explosion and did not affect any residents.
The management confirmed that no casualties were reported and that an investigation into the incident has been launched.
The statement, signed by Mr. Steve Makanjuola on behalf of NEPZA and China-Africa Investment FZC, was made available to journalists on Monday.
According to the release, the fire occurred at Good Mattress FZE, one of the enterprises operating within the free trade zone, on Sunday.
The statement said the fire was swiftly contained thanks to the prompt response of OGFTZ’s internal fire service team, working closely with the Ogun State Fire Service and partner private companies with established ties to the zone.
The management added, “This timely intervention successfully prevented the fire from spreading to neighbouring enterprises. No casualties were recorded, and the incident was effectively controlled before it could pose any wider risk.”
The Media recalls that a company within the free trade zone was engulfed in flames at around 8 a.m. on Sunday.
According to media reports, some residents claimed the fire originated from a gas explosion at a foam-producing company within the industrial park.
However, the management of the Ogun Free Trade Zone clarified, “Contrary to reports circulating online, the incident did not affect any residential areas, nor was it caused by a gas explosion. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and verified findings will be communicated through official channels in due course.”
The management reiterated that operations within the free trade zone are conducted lawfully and in full compliance with all applicable safety, legal, and regulatory requirements.
It also expressed appreciation for the cooperation and support of government agencies, host communities, and private companies during the incident, highlighting that the collective response underscored the importance of partnership, preparedness, and coordinated emergency management.
The zone urged members of the media to rely on official sources for information to ensure accurate reporting and prevent the spread of misinformation.
The management stated that it remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety and operational integrity across all enterprises and assured the public that the situation is fully under control.
