The Niger State Government has directed residents living in hamlets around Kainji Lake to vacate the area within two months to facilitate resettlement by the Emirate Council.
The directive was disclosed in a statement on Wednesday by Mr. Bologi Ibrahim, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Muhammad Bago.
Governor Bago issued the order during a condolence visit to the Emir of Borgu, Alhaji Muhammad-Haliru Dantoro, Kitoro IV, at his palace in New Bussa. He expressed sympathy to the Emir and the people of the Emirate over a recent terrorist attack that claimed several lives.

Bago explained that the resettlement is necessary to prevent collateral damage as his administration, in partnership with the Federal Government, moves to clear the forest. The area has reportedly become a haven for criminals, making it unsafe for inhabitants.
The governor also raised concerns over the influx of unverified outsiders into the Emirate, noting that the presence of informants had undermined security efforts. He called on the Emirate Council to actively collaborate with security agencies and all levels of government to tackle insecurity in the region.
Expressing condolences to the families of the victims, Bago prayed for the repose of those killed in the attack.
Echoing the governor’s sentiments, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Aliyu Abdullahi, said the Federal Government supports efforts to restore peace and security. He added that relocating residents and reclaiming the forest for safe community use would be a “welcome development.”
