The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has debunked reports alleging that it requested a ₦10,000 contribution from its members to fund the party.

In a statement released on Sunday, PDP spokesperson Ini Ememobong clarified that his remarks, made in response to a question on how the party intends to finance its activities following the defection of some governors, were misrepresented.

Ememobong explained that the party’s funding approach is rooted in voluntary public support, recalling that in 1998, modest contributions from supporters helped finance the PDP and gave ordinary people a sense of ownership.

He said the party is returning to that model, noting that widespread voluntary donations could generate significant resources. According to him, similar grassroots support is already evident in states such as Plateau and Akwa Ibom.

Ememobong stated that although the report correctly quoted his remarks, the headline distorted the true meaning of his comments.

In a press statement, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) expressed concern over a publication by The Media, which it said was carried under a misleading headline suggesting the party had asked members to contribute ₦10,000 each to fund its activities.

He explained that the mention of ₦10,000 was merely illustrative, used to highlight the potential impact of collective voluntary support, and did not amount to a directive, levy, or mandatory contribution.

Ememobong stressed that there is no fixed sum, no compulsory payment, and no obligation placed on any member of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The PDP spokesperson called on party members and the general public to disregard the report and to continue supporting the party on a voluntary basis in whatever manner they consider appropriate.
