The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has clarified why Super Eagles players were absent from the medal ceremony at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Nigeria secured third place on Saturday after defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties, but the players were not present for the medal presentation following Sunday’s final between Morocco and Senegal.

Gusau explained that the players were compelled to leave immediately after the playoff match due to club obligations, which required their prompt return.

Speaking on X on Monday, Gusau noted that Nigeria was not alone in facing this challenge, citing that Egypt’s players experienced a similar situation.

“The players were unable to receive their medals on Sunday because their clubs had already requested their return following Saturday’s game,” he said.
“I currently have the medals in my possession. This was also the case for Egypt. Had the medal ceremony been held immediately after the match, the players would have collected their awards.”

The result marked Nigeria’s ninth third-place finish in AFCON history, the highest achieved by any nation in the tournament.
