A heavily pregnant woman abducted alongside her daughter in Kyaram community, Garga district of Kanam Local Government Area, Plateau State, has reportedly given birth while in captivity following the killing of her husband.
The National Secretary of the Kanam Development Association (KADA), Shehu Kanam, disclosed in a statement to the media in Jos on Monday that the traumatized woman delivered prematurely after learning that her husband, Umar Rufa’i, had been shot dead by the kidnappers.
According to Kanam, the attackers stormed the family home in the early hours of Sunday, killing Rufa’i before abducting his wife and daughter to an unknown location.
“A few hours after the abduction, the kidnappers contacted the family to inform them that the woman had given birth while still in captivity,” Kanam said.
He added, “We are shocked and deeply saddened by the brutal killing of Umar at his residence in Kyaram community, Garga area of Kanam LGA, on January 17, 2026, around midnight. His wife and daughter remain in captivity. We condemn this heinous act and extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the entire Kyaram community. Umar was buried according to Islamic rites on Sunday, January 18, 2026.”

Kanam noted that the Garga district has long been plagued by banditry and kidnappings, with repeated incidents of killings and abductions. He lamented that despite appeals to the government, security challenges in the area persist.
“We urge the authorities to take immediate action to address this ongoing crisis,” he said.
