LAGOS WILL SUPPORT NCC TO DRIVE ECONOMIC GROWTH – SANWO-OLU
By Aishat Momoh. O.

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has assured the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) of the state government’s continued support to drive economic growth through investments in technology and communications.
Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance on Thursday while receiving the Governing Board of the NCC, led by its Chairman, Chief Idris Olorunnimbe, during a courtesy visit to Lagos House, Marina.
The governor said Lagos remains open to investments and would go beyond expectations to encourage growth in technology, communications and other key sectors critical to economic expansion. He described the NCC as one of the most forward-looking federal government commissions and praised President Bola Tinubu for appointing credible professionals to steer the affairs of the communications regulator.
According to Sanwo-Olu, the communications sector is a major enabler of Nigeria’s economy and a critical growth path capable of deepening the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“This is a very strong service industry that we believe will be one of the deep growth paths that can help us further deepen the GDP of our country,” he said.
He added that Lagos would continue to serve as a testing ground and demonstration hub for national development initiatives, stressing the need for fairness and purposeful governance across the country.
“We will continue to support NCC. I can assure you that we will do more than what is expected. We are not a government that is averse to investment. Technology and communication are the next growth paths that we want to be part of,” the governor said.
Earlier, NCC Board Chairman, Chief Idris Olorunnimbe, described Sanwo-Olu as a mentor and said the governor played a key role in his public service journey, having first appointed him to serve on the board of the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund.
Olorunnimbe noted that Lagos was the first state the newly inaugurated NCC Governing Board chose to visit, citing the strategic importance of the state to the commission’s operations.
He said parts of Lagos remain unserved or underserved in terms of telecommunications infrastructure, largely due to commercial viability concerns by operators.
Olorunnimbe appealed to the Lagos State Government to consider granting free right of way in some areas to encourage operators to deploy infrastructure to underserved communities.
“We would like Lagos State to blaze the trail among other states by granting free right of way in some areas. This can serve as an incentive to operators and a pilot scheme for other states,” he said.
He added that the NCC would work closely with the Lagos State Commissioner and the Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA) to design and implement the initiative.
