Yeni kuti, the first child of the late Afrobeat Pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has reacted to Wizkid’s recent online clash with her brother, Seun Kuti.
The Media reports that the dispute began last week after Seun Kuti criticised Wizkid’s fan base, popularly known as wizkid fc, over comparisons between the singer’s legacy and influence and that of his father, the late Fela Kuti.
The disagreement escalated after several days of exchanges, with Seun challenging Wizkid to demonstrate his concern for his fans by intervening in the ongoing online confrontation.
Wizkid broke his silence in defence of his fans by responding to Seun Kuti online, stating that he was “bigger than your father” and daring seun to do his worst.
The comment triggered widespread controversy on social media, with some users blaming Seun for escalating the dispute, while others, including some of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s children, criticised Wizkid for what they described as disrespect to the late afrobeat legend.
The development sparked renewed public debate over the legacy and influence of Wizkid and Fela, drawing mixed reactions from Nigerian celebrities and fans.
Amid the backlash, Yeni Kuti said she chose not to get involved in the dispute because of her close relationship with Wizkid. She described the singer as a longtime friend and expressed affection for him.
Yeni, who referred to Wizkid as her “padi”, urged the public to shift focus from the controversy and unite in celebrating Fela’s legacy, particularly ahead of this year’s Grammy awards.
she said Wizkid has shared a long-standing relationship with the Kuti family, recalling that he once performed as a backup singer at the new Africa shrine during Felabration.
Calling for reconciliation, Yeni stressed that continued attacks on Fela’s legacy were unnecessary, noting that the late musician’s influence remains evident decades after his death. she urged parties involved to resolve their differences and allow the afrobeat icon’s contributions to be respected and celebrated.
