The Lagos State Government has warned operators of articulated vehicles, tankers and trucks to strictly comply with traffic laws and prescribed speed limits, stressing that violators will face the full weight of the law.

The Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Mr. Sola Giwa, issued the warning in a statement on Sunday, following a crash involving a heavy-duty truck conveying Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and a privately owned vehicle.

The incident occurred at the crest of Apakun Bridge, inward Oshodi.

According to Giwa, preliminary security assessments revealed that the truck, with registration number EKY 120 YK, was speeding in violation of established traffic safety standards when it rammed into a moving silver Toyota Corolla with registration number EKY 289 HM.

He said the force of the collision caused severe traffic disruption and posed “an immediate and existential threat to lives and property” within the surrounding area.

Giwa disclosed that officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) promptly mobilised to the scene, successfully rescuing and extricating the injured victims from the wreckage.

“The affected pedestrians and the injured driver were swiftly conveyed to a nearby medical facility, where they are currently receiving intensive, life-preserving medical treatment,” he said.

To ensure public safety and maintain order during the rescue and evacuation operations, personnel of the Ajao Estate Police Division were deployed to provide security reinforcement, a move Giwa said helped prevent secondary incidents and ensured an unhindered emergency response.

He added that operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were also strategically deployed, in view of the inherent danger posed by the truck’s highly combustible cargo.

The Special Adviser condemned what he described as the alarming frequency of road traffic accidents caused by reckless speeding, particularly among operators of trucks, tankers and other articulated vehicles.

He described such behaviour as “egregiously irresponsible, dangerously negligent and wholly antithetical” to the Lagos State Government’s goal of building a safe, orderly and efficiently regulated transportation system.

Giwa warned that the state government would not hesitate to prosecute any individual found culpable of endangering lives through reckless or unlawful driving practices.
