OSUN ALGON RESPONDS TO ASSEMBLY’S DIVERSION CLAIMS, CLARIFIES LOCAL GOVERNMENT FINANCES

The Osun State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC), has clarified how council finances are managed in response to allegations of fund diversion by the State House of Assembly.
The clarification followed claims attributed to Adewale Egbedun, Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, who on Sunday alleged that significant sums were misappropriated by APC-elected local government chairmen.
Speaking at a press briefing in Osogbo on Monday, ALGON State Chairman Abiodun Idowu stated that the councils operate strictly within the framework of existing laws.
Idowu explained that opening and regularising local government accounts is a lengthy process governed by statutory requirements. “Members of the public should know that it took over seven months for the process to be fully completed,” he said.

He added, “All salary payments and financial transactions were executed only after meeting conditions stipulated by the Local Government Administration Law. No payment was made without approval from the legislative arm of each council, as required by law.”
Idowu emphasized that these procedures are in place to prevent any violation of financial regulations at the local government level.
He insisted that claims of illegal fund handling do not reflect the actual operations of the councils.
“For the avoidance of doubt, there is no wrongdoing in the administration of local governments in the state,” Idowu stated.
He further clarified that the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, is not involved in local government administration in Osun State, contrary to allegations linked to the Assembly leadership.
