The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, Prince Sunday Fagbemi, has urged the party to conduct transparent and inclusive congresses, stressing that every member wishing to contest should be allowed to do so without obstruction.

Fagbemi made the appeal on Friday during a meeting of the state executive committee, which brought together party chairmen and secretaries from the state’s 16 local government areas. The gathering was convened to review the tenure of outgoing executives and prepare for the upcoming ward, local government, and state congresses.

Speaking at the meeting, Fagbemi commended party leaders at all levels for fostering unity and progress despite occasional disagreements.

“Politics is about interests, and it is normal to have varied interests. Differences of opinion should never undermine party cohesion,” he said.

With the tenure of current executives nearing its end, he expressed gratitude to members for their cooperation and highlighted the party’s successes in recent state elections.

“Some of us might never have met without this executive bond. I appreciate everyone and apologise on behalf of all where we might have wronged each other. I seek forgiveness,” he added. “Some of us may not return after the congresses, but we must part on good terms.”

Fagbemi described the forthcoming congresses as a test of character, integrity, and adherence to the party’s constitution, emphasising that the leadership has always acted within party rules.

He confirmed the congress schedule: ward congresses on February 18, local government congresses on February 21, and the state congress on March 4, ahead of the national convention.

“Everyone who wishes to contest should be allowed to do so. All relevant information must be shared openly with interested members, without forming exclusive caucuses or sidelining stakeholders,” Fagbemi stated, stressing the importance of inclusiveness in maintaining party unity.

He also commended party executives at all levels, particularly local government leaders, whom he called the backbone of the party due to their grassroots connection, despite what he termed “unwarranted criticisms.”

Finally, Fagbemi encouraged party leaders to step up mobilisation efforts across the state, noting that the party’s membership e-registration exercise would soon conclude.
