The minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has rejected comments about limiting movement during the election period. He is emphasizing that the final election results will determine who really has power in the country‘s capital.

Speaking after monitoring the Area Council elections on Saturday in Abuja, Wike addressed comments credited to FCT Senator, Ireti Kingibe, criticizing the presidential directive to impose a curfew on the territory from 8pm on Friday – the eve of the election.

The minister explained his previous instructions about movement, which had caused some disagreement. He said the restrictions, which were in place from Friday evening to Saturday, were not something he personally decided. Instead, they were approved by the President.

He was upset that his words had not been checked properly before people questioned them.
“I don’t want to get involved in issues,” he said. “Once the election results are out, we’ll know everything.”

Looking at how the voting went, the minister noticed a common difference in how many people voted.
He said that turnout in the city center is usually low, but he praised the “quite impressivenumber of people who voted in several smaller towns.

He explained that fewer people were voting in cities because these elections were held outside the usual schedule.
But he stressed that the main success was that there was no instability.

Wike, who talked to voters on the ground, praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the hard work and professionalism of their staff.

He also praised the security agencies, saying there were no reports of violence reaching his office.
“We thank God that everything is peaceful,” he said, highlighting that the main goal of having a peaceful election had been achieved.
