Israeli and United States airstrikes on Tuesday targeted a building belonging to Iran’s Assembly of Experts, the constitutional body responsible for appointing and supervising the country’s supreme leader, according to local media reports.

The attack comes days after former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed during a wave of coordinated US-Israeli strikes on Saturday.

Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported that “American-Zionist criminals attacked the Assembly of Experts building in Qom,” a city south of Tehran. Footage circulated by local media showed the structure severely damaged. However, there were no immediate reports of casualties.

The Mehr news agency indicated that the building was no longer being used for official meetings. Tasnim also reported that the main headquarters of the Assembly of Experts in Tehran had been struck a day earlier.

Following confirmation of Khamenei’s death, Iran on Sunday announced the commencement of a political transition process. The plan includes the establishment of an interim leadership council comprising the president, the head of the judiciary, and a jurist from the Guardian Council, the powerful oversight body that vets legislation and electoral candidates.

Iran’s top security official, Ali Larijani, is also expected to play a central role during the transition.

The interim council is set to govern the country pending the selection of a permanent successor to the supreme leader, as regional tensions continue to escalate.
