United States President Donald Trump has dismissed the possibility of immediate negotiations with Iran, despite indications from Tehran that it is open to dialogue.

“Their air defense, Air Force, Navy, and Leadership is gone. They want to talk. I said ‘Too Late!’” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on Tuesday.

His remarks come just two days after he signalled willingness to engage in talks, amid the ongoing joint Israeli-US bombardment of Iran. The conflicting signals from Washington highlight diplomatic uncertainty as the conflict enters its fourth day and tensions intensify across the Middle East.

The military campaign began on February 28, 2026, with coordinated US and Israeli strikes targeting Iranian leadership, air defence systems, missile sites, naval assets, and command facilities. The operation reportedly resulted in the deaths of several senior Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whose death was confirmed by Iranian state media on March 1. A period of national mourning was subsequently declared in Iran.

Iran has since launched retaliatory missile and drone attacks on US bases, Israel, and Gulf allies, with reported damage to infrastructure in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. The US military has confirmed that six American service members have been killed since the escalation began.

President Trump has described the campaign as a necessary response to Iran’s ballistic missile programme and nuclear ambitions, calling it the “last best chance” to neutralise threats to the United States and its allies.
