AMUSAN OPENS 2026 SEASON WITH SECOND-PLACE FINISH AT VELOCITY FEST
Agency Report

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan made an impressive start to her 2026 season, finishing second in the women’s 200m at the Velocity Fest in Jamaica.
The world record holder in the women’s 100m hurdles clocked a season’s best of 23.25 seconds, showcasing her versatility beyond her signature event.
Jamaican sprint star Elaine Thompson-Herah won the race in 22.61 seconds, while compatriot Ackera Nugent finished third in 23.35 seconds in a competitive field.
The performance marks Amusan’s first outing since the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where she secured Nigeria’s only medal with a silver finish.
She is expected to continue her season at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene on July 4, where she will return to her specialty, the 100m hurdles. The event, part of the Diamond League series, will be held at Hayward Field and is set to feature a strong lineup.
Amusan will compete against top athletes including reigning Olympic champion Masai Russell, two-time world champion Danielle Williams, and World Championships bronze medallist Grace Stark.
The 28-year-old, who holds the world record of 12.12 seconds, has a strong history in Eugene, where she won her first world title and set the record at the 2022 World Championships. She also claimed the Diamond League final title at the venue in 2023.
Amusan remains one of the most dominant athletes in her discipline, having won the Diamond League final for three consecutive seasons between 2021 and 2023.
