The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially commenced preparations for its 2026 electoral process, announcing that Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, will host an Extraordinary General Assembly today to set up the federation’s Electoral Committee, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The assembly is tasked with appointing members of the NFF Electoral Committee and the Electoral Appeals Committee, as well as selecting an Independent Auditor to oversee governance and compliance. Officials from FIFA and CAF are already in Nigeria to observe the proceedings and ensure the electoral process meets international standards.
The NFF holds elections every four years during its Annual General Assembly, with the next vote scheduled for the 82nd Annual General Assembly in a city yet to be announced. The current NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, was elected on September 30, 2022, during the 78th Annual General Assembly in Benin City, Edo State.
The extraordinary gathering in Yenagoa brings together chairmen and secretaries of Nigeria’s 36 state football associations and the Federal Capital Territory, alongside members of the NFF Executive Committee, league officials, management, and representatives from the Coaches, Referees, and Players’ Associations.
Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, is expected to declare the assembly open at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, Government House. Top officials, including National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko, Director General Bukola Olopade, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports Abdul Ningi, and House Committee on Sports Chairman Kabiru Amadu, are scheduled to attend.
Gusau is set to deliver a welcome address before the business session, which will focus on proposed amendments to the federation’s statutes, the Electoral Code, and the Standing Orders of the General Assembly.
