The Nigeria Police Force repelled an attack on its officers during an operation to apprehend a suspected bandit leader in Bichi Local Government Area, resulting in one death and several injuries.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident took place around 6:30 p.m. on March 22, following a distress call from the Tudun Wulli police outpost.

According to the sources, a team from the Anti-Kidnapping Squad, led by ASP Abubakar Musa, acted on credible intelligence that a suspected bandit leader named Muhammad, also known as “Senator” or “Kirchi,” had arrived in Tudun Wulli village to celebrate the Sallah festival.

“The suspect was seen carrying an AK-47 rifle, but he fled into a crowd when officers attempted to apprehend him,” a security source said.

The situation reportedly escalated as some members of the crowd allegedly attacked the police team with stones and other dangerous objects to prevent the arrest.

During the confrontation, ASP Lawali Hamidu sustained injuries, and the windscreen of a police patrol vehicle was damaged.

“In the course of a tactical withdrawal, four people suffered gunshot wounds and were rushed to the General Hospital in Bichi for treatment,” the source added.

One of the victims, Halima Saidu, was later pronounced dead by a medical doctor at the hospital, while the others were reported to be responding to treatment.

Police officers involved in the operation were safely evacuated, and additional security personnel have been deployed to prevent further breakdowns of law and order.

The command confirmed that the situation is now under control and assured residents that investigations are ongoing.

Authorities also stated that efforts are being intensified to apprehend the fleeing suspect.
