A dispatch rider has died in a fatal road crash at the Motorways Inward Estate axis of Alapere, Lagos State, after a collision with a tanker.

The incident was confirmed on Monday by the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, who said an empty NIPCO tanker with registration number TTN-776ZQ was involved.

According to him, preliminary investigations indicated that the tanker driver was allegedly speeding when he hit the moving dispatch rider, resulting in the rider’s instant death.

Taofiq added that LASTMA operatives quickly arrived at the scene and intervened to prevent a breakdown of law and order after some aggrieved dispatch riders reportedly attacked the tanker driver.

He said the agency’s personnel acted with restraint and professionalism, rescuing the injured driver from the mob and handing him over to officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service, who rushed him to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“In the immediate aftermath, officers of LASTMA arrived expeditiously at the scene. Their prompt intervention prevented a breakdown of law and order as enraged dispatch riders attacked the tanker driver,” he stated.

He further explained that the driver was safely extracted from the crowd and taken for urgent medical attention due to severe injuries sustained during the attack.

Police officers from the Alausa Division were also deployed to restore calm and disperse the gathering.

Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed condolences to the family of the deceased rider and urged motorists to prioritise safety and avoid reckless driving.

He warned tanker drivers and other road users against speeding, describing it as a major cause of avoidable road accidents.

Bakare-Oki stressed that all road users have a responsibility to drive cautiously and protect lives, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the need for greater vigilance on the roads.

The agency confirmed that the tanker and the wrecked motorcycle had been handed over to the police, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.
