Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that Nigerian troops ought not to have engaged Biafran soldiers during the Nigerian Civil War, describing civil conflicts as deeply tragic because they pit citizens against one another.

Obasanjo made the remarks in Abeokuta on Monday, May 11, 2026, while reflecting on his experiences in the 1967–1970 civil war and discussing issues of national unity and reconciliation.

The former president, who served as a military commander during the war, noted that civil wars are fundamentally different from external conflicts, as they should ideally aim at restoring peace and unity rather than causing destruction.

He stressed that both Nigerian soldiers and Biafran fighters were citizens of the same country, making the confrontation emotionally painful for those involved.

“We shouldn’t have fought ourselves. Civil war is different from fighting external enemies because at the end of the day, you are fighting your brothers,” he said.

Obasanjo further urged Nigerians to draw lessons from the war by prioritizing peace, dialogue, and unity to prevent future internal conflicts.
