The Bayelsa State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief George Turnah, has accused Governor Douye Diri of failing to actively support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The allegation has triggered a political disagreement in the state, with the All Progressives Congress chairman, Chief Warman Weri Ogoriba, rejecting the claim and insisting that Diri is among the leading supporters of the President’s second-term ambition.

Turnah made the allegation on Friday while addressing PDP members at the party secretariat in Bayelsa, where he questioned the governor’s commitment to Tinubu’s political campaign.

He also challenged Diri’s alleged support for the City Boys Movement, a support group associated with the President’s political activities.

The PDP chairman argued that those claiming to support Tinubu’s re-election should provide evidence of their involvement in activities promoting his political ambition.

He questioned Diri’s absence from some APC presidential campaign activities, including the inauguration of the Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja and the flag-off of the party’s presidential campaign in Kaduna.

Turnah also asked whether the governor had visited communities or organised activities in Bayelsa to demonstrate support for Tinubu’s re-election.

He further claimed that there were no APC campaign billboards or an inaugurated presidential campaign council in the state.

“Have they inaugurated any campaign council for President Tinubu in Bayelsa State? Let us not deceive ourselves. They are not supporting him.

“We are the ones, the PDP, who are supporting President Tinubu’s re-election,” he said.

However, reacting to the allegation, Ogoriba dismissed Turnah’s claims as baseless, maintaining that Diri had demonstrated his support for Tinubu through his public statements and political engagements.

The APC chairman described it as laughable to suggest that the governor was not backing the President’s re-election, insisting that his actions showed he was at the forefront of the campaign.

Ogoriba also rejected claims that Diri had failed to support the City Boys Movement in Bayelsa, stating that the governor had backed the group in various ways, including attending its events.

He questioned Turnah’s understanding of the group’s activities and maintained that his allegations did not reflect the political situation in the state.

The APC chairman urged residents to disregard the PDP leader’s comments, describing them as an attempt to create unnecessary political tension.

The disagreement comes amid political realignments and preparations by parties ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the level of support for Tinubu in Bayelsa becoming a subject of political debate.

However, the two party chairmen have presented conflicting accounts of Diri’s involvement in the President’s re-election campaign, without providing independent evidence to establish the extent of his participation.
