The Federal Government has introduced a monthly cash assistance programme that will provide N50,000 to vulnerable households to help cushion the effects of rising living costs.

According to Channels Television, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, announced the initiative in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja.

Doro said the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI) was a presidential initiative aimed at providing immediate financial support to millions of vulnerable Nigerians.

He explained that the programme was introduced in response to rising global food inflation and the increasing prices of essential commodities, which have continued to place financial pressure on households.

“Under this intervention, eligible beneficiaries will receive N50,000 monthly, providing direct assistance to help meet essential needs and ease the burden of living costs,” he said.

The minister noted that the intervention would undergo periodic reviews to reflect changes in the cost of living, adding that beneficiaries would be notified directly before any adjustments were made.

He disclosed that the ministry was partnering with licensed digital financial service providers to ensure the secure, timely and transparent distribution of the funds.

According to him, beneficiaries would receive text messages from the service providers seeking their consent before the money is transferred directly into their bank accounts or mobile wallets.

Doro emphasised that interested Nigerians were not required to submit applications, pay fees or register through agents to benefit from the programme.

He also warned against fraudulent activities, urging beneficiaries to protect their personal identification numbers (PINs) and Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) from unauthorised persons.

“If you are unsure about any message, or anyone asks you for money, call the official NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222,” he advised.

The minister said NERSI was designed to complement existing Federal Government social protection and economic support initiatives while strengthening household resilience and economic stability.

He added that the programme aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to implementing the intervention with transparency, accountability and dignity.
