The Director-General of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) Campaign Organisation, Felix Hyat, has urged Nigerians not to be apprehensive about the prospect of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde becoming president, expressing confidence in his ability to address the country’s challenges and put Nigeria on a new path.

Hyat made the remarks on Wednesday in Abuja during the inauguration of North-Central zonal state coordinators of the Makinde/Daura Campaign Organisation. He said the presidential ticket had the capacity to provide the leadership needed to improve the country’s fortunes.

He argued that Nigeria could not afford to continue on its current trajectory, pointing to insecurity and economic hardship as some of the major problems confronting the nation.

According to Hyat, the campaign’s success would depend on effective grassroots mobilisation, beginning at polling units and extending through wards, local governments and states to the national level.

He described the Makinde/Daura ticket as a strong political combination and urged campaign officials to recognise the importance of the party’s leadership, candidates and campaign personnel in achieving their objectives.

Hyat emphasised that party chairmen at different levels of the political structure must be respected, adding that candidates and those responsible for delivering the campaign’s mandate also had critical roles to play.

He called on the newly inaugurated coordinators to work together and intensify mobilisation across the North-Central region and other parts of the country ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The campaign director-general stressed that elections were often determined at polling units, warning that the appointment of ineffective polling agents could undermine the campaign’s chances of success.

He urged coordinators to engage voters directly, encourage them to scrutinise their representatives and ensure that citizens had the information needed to make informed electoral decisions.

Hyat also praised Makinde’s personal qualities and experience, insisting that Nigerians had no reason to fear his presidential ambition. He described the governor as a decent individual capable of providing the leadership the country needs.

He further argued that Nigeria required a leader who could travel freely within the country without excessive security and medical arrangements, using the example to highlight what he considered an important quality of effective leadership.

Hyat expressed optimism that the campaign would succeed in the January 16, 2027, presidential election, urging Nigerians to remain hopeful and support Makinde’s ambition. He also criticised political leaders whom he accused of neglecting their communities despite claiming to represent the interests of the people.

Speaking at the event, the Campaign Council’s Deputy Director of Operations, Tony Aziegbemi, urged the state directors to strengthen grassroots mobilisation and communicate Makinde’s proposed policies on the economy, education, security and governance to voters.

Aziegbemi blamed the economic policies of the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government for worsening poverty and hunger in the country. He claimed that 35 million Nigerians went to bed hungry every night, attributing the figure to the National Bureau of Statistics.

He said the campaign’s responsibility was to reach millions of Nigerians affected by hunger and poverty, arguing that the situation was linked to what he described as shortcomings in the Federal Government’s economic policies.

Aziegbemi assured Nigerians that a government led by Makinde and Daura would prioritise tackling hunger and poverty, pledging that no citizen would go to bed hungry under their administration.
