The Chief Press Secretary to the Benue State Governor, Sir Tersoo Kula, has made a case for Governor Hyacinth Alia’s re-election in 2027, arguing that his administration needs a second term to consolidate ongoing reforms and deliver lasting development.

Kula stated that governance in Benue State had often focused on projects that generate immediate public attention rather than sustainable development, stressing that meaningful progress requires careful planning, patience and continuity.

In an article, the governor’s spokesperson argued that Alia inherited a state grappling with insecurity, outstanding financial obligations, weak institutions, youth unemployment and economic challenges.

He maintained that the problems could not be resolved within a single budget cycle or political term, noting that they required sustained commitment, discipline and effective policies.

According to Kula, the first term of an administration should be assessed based on the challenges it inherited and the foundations it established for future development.

He raised questions about the transparency of public finances, regular payment of workers’ salaries, improvements in schools and healthcare facilities, road construction and rehabilitation, agricultural development and security.

The governor’s spokesperson stressed that development should be measured by its impact on ordinary residents, including farmers who need accessible roads to transport their produce, traders seeking safer routes to markets, students requiring functional classrooms and families needing access to basic healthcare.

He argued that such improvements might not generate immediate public excitement but were essential to building a sustainable foundation for economic growth and improved living standards.

Kula further stated that Alia’s first four years should focus on strengthening government institutions, restoring public confidence, improving local administration, supporting agriculture, addressing insecurity and attracting private investment.

He added that a second term would provide an opportunity to expand existing initiatives, complete ongoing projects and translate reforms into measurable development outcomes.

The governor’s spokesperson also warned against repeatedly restarting development plans whenever a new administration assumes office, arguing that continuity would allow policies to mature and deliver their intended benefits.

However, he emphasised that continuity should go hand in hand with accountability, adding that the people of Benue State must assess whether the administration’s policies and projects were moving the state forward.

Kula concluded that, in his view, Benue was making progress under Alia’s leadership, claiming that even members of the opposition recognised the state’s movement from negative to positive.

The statement comes as political discussions surrounding the 2027 governorship election continue to draw attention to governance, development priorities and the future direction of Benue State.
