The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested two suspects for allegedly vandalising public electricity installations in Gwaram and Auyo Local Government Areas of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists, noting that the arrests were made in separate incidents involving a streetlight cable and an electricity transformer.

According to the statement, one of the suspects, Aminu Musa, 38, from New Gwaram Town, was arrested at about 1:00 a.m. on September 25, 2026, while allegedly cutting an armoured cable connected to a streetlight.

Adam explained that the suspect, who worked as a streetlight generator operator, was taken to the police station, while items recovered from the scene were retained as evidence.

In a separate incident, the police arrested 26-year-old Laminu Sha’aibu from Gumusuwa Village in Kafin Hausa Local Government Area over the alleged vandalism of an electricity transformer at Maskangayu Village in Auyo LGA.

The police spokesperson said the suspect was apprehended on September 29, 2026, after residents reportedly found him in possession of dismantled transformer coils.

He added that police operatives intervened after receiving information that an angry mob was preparing to attack the suspect.

“The suspect was rescued and taken to the nearest Primary Health Centre for medical attention, where he was treated and subsequently discharged,” Adam stated.

He further disclosed that the suspect allegedly confessed during interrogation to spending three nights dismantling the transformer without being detected.

According to the spokesperson, investigations were conducted to establish the circumstances surrounding the incidents and determine whether other individuals were involved.

He confirmed that both suspects had been charged to court.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijjani Murtala, commended residents for providing timely information that led to the arrests.

The commissioner urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities, particularly those involving electricity installations, streetlights and other public infrastructure.

He also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting public facilities and ensuring that individuals found responsible for vandalism are brought to justice.
