Alkali Baba Usman, the Inspector General of Police, has revealed plans to recruit ex-agitators into the Nigeria Police Force, particularly at the grassroots level.

This occurs at the same time that Major General Barry Tariye Ndiomu (ret.), the Interim Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, paid the Police Chief a courtesy visit at the Police Headquarters in Abuja to solicit recruitment of ex-Niger Delta Militants to its ranks and officers’ corps.

The IGP was also disappointed by the low turnout of potential recruits from the region at previous recruitment exercises.

“The quota of the South South region was rarely filled despite efforts to encourage the enlistment of young men from the region.”

The Police Chief assured the Interim Administrator of the Amnesty Programme of the readiness of the Police to partner in the recruitment of officers especially at the grassroots.

He added that the element of punishment in law enforcement will be brought into force to avoid recurrence of criminal acts in the organisation.

On his part, the Interim Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Gen Ndiomu revealed that the PAP has over the years trained a lot of youths from the Niger Delta region who would fit into the manpower needs of the Police.

The Interim administrator also expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the Police High Command for providing security services at its offices and facilities in Abuja and across the Niger Delta region.
